Introduction[edit]

It is a type of electric-discharge lamp in which an electric current flows between electrodes through a gas or vapor. In nearly every arc lamp, the light results from the luminescence of the gas. However in carbon arc lamp, the light is produced by the incandescence of one or both electrodes. The color of the arc depends upon the electrode material and the surrounding atmosphere. Majority of the lamps have a negative resistance characteristic so that the resistance decreases after the arc has been struck. Consequently some form of current-limiting device is required in the electric circuit. hi there! my name is unknown and I hacked this thing :)!

Main Features[edit]

  1. An arc lamp produces light by the sparking i.e. an electrical arc of a high current between two conducting electrodes, generally carbon rods.
  2. Arc lamps are rugged and adaptable to many uses and have the advantage of relatively high efficiency and concentration of the light source along with some control of the color of light.
  3. Arc lamps are typically used to obtain high brightness from a concentrated light source, where large amounts of radiant energy are needed, and where spectral distribution is an advantage.
  4. Arc lamps are operated best on circuits activated by special generators or transformers that closely regulated the circuit current at a constant value.
  5. In minority of rare cases, arc lamps are operated in multiple at secondary distribution voltages. Since the conductivity of the arc is non-linear, it increases significantly with increased current.
  6. As the arc gets heated up, the ionized gases in the arc starts decreasing in resistance allowing still more current to flow. This is a fundamental characteristic of all arc and electric discharge types of light sources.
  7. The necessity of trimming and frequent replacement of the electrodes, and the presence of undesirable combustion byproducts are two main objections to the use of arc lamps.
  8. The arc lamp was the earliest type of electric illuminant. Carbon arc lamp was the foremost practical commercial electric lighting device, but the use of arc lamps at present is limited. In many of its earlier functions, the carbon arc lamp has been outdated by the high-intensity mercury vapor lamp.

Types of Arc lights[edit]

Open Arc Light[edit]

It is the earliest type of arc lamp. It is called an open arc lamp because it is operated with the carbon electrodes exposed to the atmosphere. Initially, it was considered to be the most powerful artificial illuminant but afterwards many shortcomings were found in the operation of these lamps, for example, the unsteadiness of the light and the rapid consumption of the carbons

Enclosed Arc Light[edit]

It is an improved type of light that was introduced around the mid-1890s. In enclosed arc lights, the electrodes are operated within a glass globe. This restrains the amount of air that might enter the arc and thus has an immediate benefit of considerably increasing the electrodes life. The longer life of the electrodes offset the fact that these luminaries are less efficient than the open arc lamps. Both types of arc lamps are also known as "crater arcs".

Flame-carbon arc Light[edit]

Later on, certain chemicals were combined with the carbon to form the electrodes that provided a highly luminous arc. This led to the development of the flame-carbon arc, so called because the arc stream provided most of the light. The efficiency of this type of lamp was three times that of the old open-arc lamp and about ten times that of the enclosed type.
