About Us

SHIFT Energy Inc., a member of the Mariner Group of Companies was incorporated in 2009 with funding from private investors and support from the Government of Canada (National Research Council) and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Led by visionary and veteran entrepreneur Gerry Pond, SHIFT leverages the software development experience and infrastructure resources of the Mariner family to develop and deploy innovative solutions for our large commercial and industrial energy customers. SHIFT’s multi-disciplinary approach to problem-solving and value creation has resulted in the innovative creation of a new approach to building energy management – Intelligent Live Recommissioning (ILR).

Mission & Vision

We are an organization that is focused on innovative energy efficiency software technology and servicing business needs. Our goal is to drive improved energy performance for our customers thru monitoring and managing their energy spend by automating the operational day to day activities necessary to save them money, reduce their carbon footprints and make a contribution to a healthier planet.

This passion for innovation and the desire to serve is embedded in our vision:

Our company aspires to be the innovative top tier supplier of operationally-focused energy management solutions to the world. We will excel as a learning organization, exemplified by how quickly we turn client feedback and R&D efforts into improved solution offerings. We will be praised by our employees for our focus on developing them to their maximum potential within a high performance team environment. We will receive accolades from the public for our commitment to having a positive impact in our local communities where we operate and producing solutions that make the world a better place to live. We will be recognized by our customer for the exceptional value our solutions deliver and the high standard of integrity we bring to our business dealings.

Our History

Our research and development heritage goes back even before SHIFT was incorporated as a company. Almost three years of R&D were invested, with active support and talents from Mariner Group of Companies, the University of New Brunswick, and funding and research assistance from National Research Council and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency before SHIFT Energy was launched as a company in 2009.

The Company was founded by a group of like-minded entrepreneurs with experience in the diverse fields of information technology, telecommunications, engineering and environmental science. Headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, SHIFT expanded its regional presence with the opening of a second location in Halifax, Nova Scotia in February 2010 and another satellite office in Toronto in December 2013.

Our first product EnergyMentor™, an Energy Management Information System (EMIS) Dashboard was released in April, 2010. After operating in the market for over 4 years and learning from our customers, we realized that although real-time dashboard and deep analytics create the opportunity to save energy, that the required action necessary to ‘realize’ those opportunities can be operationally difficult or near impossible to execute. And without execution, the benefits of energy waste elimination are not realized or sustained. This happens mostly because of the sheer volume of data that needs to be considered and the complex decisions that need to be made in real time in order to continuously optimize a building’s environment. This eureka moment for SHIFT was the genesis of the concept of Intelligent Live Recommissioning (ILR), and the subsequent SHIFT creation of our software product Energy Optimization System (EOS™).

Information technology and Building Control System environments have now evolved to a state where Machine to Machine communication and the automation of the management of energy in buildings is possible. By taking advantage of the immense processing power of Cloud Computing and the breadth and inclusiveness of smart algorithms, a building with EOS™ can now be managed (and optimized) as a vibrant, complex energy ecosystem.

Launched in 2014, EOS™ takes advantage of our earlier EnergyMentor™ monitoring and visualization platform and brings deeper “big” data analytics and intelligent automation capabilities to the mix. This combination continuous monitoring, deep analytics and the real time use of software driven algorithms that translate information and insight into automated energy reduction action, allows SHIFT’s EOS™ to deliver 15-35% energy savings for our customers. Backed by our expert energy engineering practice and infrastructure partnerships, and world-class software support experience, we provide enterprise grade solutions that are focused on returning maximum benefits in a short payback period.
